While most people are not evil in any sense of the concept there are millions who are and they are both a constant danger and an imminent threat to the lives of most people. We cannot even begin to identify all of the evil people because they hide themselves from us. even worse the pretend to be our friends while they wish us ill. Would that we could banish evil but history shows that’s impossible. We need to find the evil people but history shows we cannot find them all. We need to defend ourselves from evil people but history shows that cannot be done. Even worse, some good people will become evil even though that’s the wrong thing to do. What we can do is be on our guard. That’s the purpose of defense. It’s why America has a military. It’s why we have philosophy and learning so we can detect and defend against evil.
