It’s about 95 miles at their closet points from Key West, Florida to the closest plint in Cuba. Cuba was first settled around 6,000 years ago but it vaulted into prominance when Christopher columbus landed there on October 27, 1492. Cuba is naturally beautiful. If you can, go there but be prepared for privations. It’s a really poor country despite having loads of natural minerals including Cobalt and Nickel.
Cobalt is a critical metal primarily used in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, smartphones, and laptops. It is also essential for manufacturing high-strength superalloys in jet engines, gas turbines, and aerospace components, as well as wear-resistant cutting tools, magnetic alloys, pigments, and medical applications.
Nickel is a critical metal for Stainless Steel accounting for over 70% of its consumption, alongside high-performance alloys for aerospace, batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), and protective plating. It is prized for corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and strength in demanding industrial and consumer applications. Those two metals alone make Cuba a highly desirable place but there is much more to Cuba than minerals.
And, although it is very hot in summer, it is delightful in winter and even in summer along the coast. And Cuba has a load of coasts.
