An aircraft is turned by moving the rudder but it can be turned faster by using the ailerons to tilt the aircraft. When the aircraft is tilted it loses some lift from the wings. The loss of lift can be accomodated by adding a bit more power and/or by increasing the angle of attack along with increasing the power and some additional rudder. If you think that’s all pretty simple you are really wrong.

Flying is not simple. The pilot needs to control the aircraft attitude with the stick which tilts, lift’s and turns the aircraft; with the rudder which turns the aircraft and the throttle which controls the power from the engine.  The rudder which sort of steers the aircraft like the steering wheel in a car but the rudder not only turns the aircraft it slows it down. In order to turn the aircraft without losing altitude or slowing it down more power is needed.

There are lots of ways to fly correctly and the pilot must be very familiar with all of the moves necessary to control the aircraft which not only means the stick and the rudder but also the power as well as the flaps. There are lots of changes during a turn and the pilot needs to be aware of them and to control them. Flying is a fantastic endeavor. Perhaps it’s not for everyone but it is for me and I’m for it.
