Sorry to disappoint some of you but a human must breathe. A fetus cannot breathe until just after it’s born and it’s airway is relatively clear. A non-breathing fetus is very different than a breathing fetus. Some fetus’ are stillborn. A stillborn fetus is not the same as a breathing fetus which is a baby. Once a fetus begins to breathe it’s no longer a fetus but a baby. Our problem is there are premature births where a fetus is placed on life support but that issue is no longer abortion. A fetus placed on life support is placed in an oxygen rich environment or has a breathing canula or even a pressure breathing device but the baby is breathing. A breathing baby is no longer a fetus, regardless of it’s gestational age. In all of this the ideas of the woman are of the most importance. A physician or anyone attending a woman can overrule a woman’s wish and medically intervene to get a premature fetus to breathe so the ability to breathe is an important milestone or event in the case of a fetus. Another consideration is that no one may stop the attempt of a fetus to breathe. A further consideration is that everything must be done to assist a fetus to breathe. Where does that leave the issue of abortion? Right where it is… In the minds of many it’s confusing. No matter. the confusion must be informed. This is serious stuff. There are additional issues that can make the decision even more confusing. It’s a big deal. It must be solved. The culture cannot continue in the present state of confusion where no one can be certain of the outcome of each situation but we need to clear this up.
