What about the guns? Why can’t everyone have one? Well, because some people aren’t brilliant so they don’t know how to act. So it ruins it for everyone else if we have to keep the guns out of the hands of the bad people. We just can’t say: “you’re bad so no gun for you.” We can say everyone can have a gun but that gets guns in the hands of people who can’t handle things. So we hedge things and say: “you have a right to a gun unless you’re a felon”. But some felons have corrected their mistakes and are better people than some non-felons. OTOH there are non-felons who shouldn’t have a rock or a knife because they are trouble. How should they be handled? We don’t know but they can’t be handled until they do something bad enough for us to keep them away from guns. Here’s what we do. You have Rights. We say that but some people have fewer rights than others. How do we figure out who has rights and who doesn’t? By keeping guns away from felons. Not everyone want’s a gun. Some people hate guns so much they’d like to remove them from the universe or only let military and law enforcement have them. The problem with that is a lot of people who can handle guns would be stopped from getting them and in America that’s wrong. The problem isn’t with the guns. The problem is with some of the people. Some people don’t want a gun. Other people want a gun. Some people who don’t want a gun don’t want anyone else to have one. So the idea of Rights was invented to settle who can and who cannot have a gun. If you are a felon, no gun. Maybe that’s not correct but it’s the best we can do.
