Why does Israel need a submarine, let alone a fleet of submarines? Next report may be that Israel Has Nuclear Powered Subs…

Right now, Israel has five Dolphin-class diesel-electric submarines. Three of the six are old Dolphin type vessels. The older Dolphin-class are 57.3 meters (188 feet) long with a 6.8-meter (22 feet) -wide beam and can travel up to 20 knots (30 miles an hour) when submerged. They can remain submerged for 30 days without surfacing. Their weapons systems are capable of firing torpedoes.

Why Diesel-Electric? Because Using a clutch doesn’t work well. Why?

A diesel engine drives an electric producing generator that stores the electricity in batteries. The batteries power electric motors. That’s all because a diesel engine needs a clutch, a way to gradually use the power from a diesel engine otherwise the engine would stall when connected to the propeller. Using the Diesel engine to run a generator means no clutch mechanism is needed but connecting the generator to an electric motor means the electricity is constant but starting an electric motor needs a lot more electricity than it takes to run an electric motor so sending the electricity to batteries which can be connected to resistors to vary the electricity or to semi-conductors which solves the problem of sending a lot of electricity for a short time to start the electric motor then changing to a lot less electricity to keep the motor running… Whew! Anyhow, that’s why Israel’s submarines are Diesel-Electric.
