Trump is brilliant! He spotted the perfect answer to keeping abortion safe.
If, IF, IF, IFF IF – get the point about IF? Trump said IF abortion is illegal (it isn’t) it means the woman is committing a crime getting one unless it’s done against her will. She would also be guilty of conspiracy. If abortion is criminalized, the woman would have to be considered a criminal ~ which shows why abortion should never be a crime. Right now the laws are trying to make it illegal to perform an abortion but legal to have one done. That’s trying to have it both ways.
If abortion is made a crime Trump would be correct to say it’s proper to punish women for having one. The Religious Right is OK punishing people who do abortions but they consider the woman who has one done a victim. That makes no sense at all. If it wasn’t for her wanting to get an abortion there wouldn’t be an abortion. If a woman hires a bank robber to rob a bank she’s guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery. In an abortion she’s not an unwilling or an unwitting bystander, she’s ordering the abortion just like she would be guilty of robbery if she orders someone else to commit the robbery.
It’s like being in possession of stolen merchandise where the one who has the illegally obtained merchandise is guilty even if they didn’t steal it. Is Trump right? There’s no way to tell. He is literslly on both sides of the issue, even if he doesn’t seem to know it.
But he’s right. He didn’t say the woman should be punished. He asked why she shouldn’t be if abortion is made a crime.
If someone drives a car to the bank so some friends can rob it, is the driver guilty of bank robbery? Of course.
Only 19 percent of Americans believe abortion should be illegal under all circumstances, according to Gallup, so Democrats and reproductive rights groups can use Trump’s comments to forcefully argue the Republican Party is way out of step with public opinion on the issue. Trump just confused the entire abortion issue which should earn him the woman’s vote because it makes it far more difficult for Congress or The Supreme Court to make abortion illegal.
If abortion is not a crime then restrictions against abortion violate the First Amendment’s protection of legal conduct. All laws that restrict abortion should be repealed ASAP.
