Co-worker Stewart Hilton and I walked around and drove around Capetown in complete safety. We walked and rode and stopped to sight-see and dine with no problem. The problem with our safety is that is was 45 years ago. Today it is completely irresponsible for white people to even briefly visit Capetown which has the highest murder rate of any city on earth. According to Reddit Cape Town still has the highest murder, attempted murder, rape and common assault crime rates and experiences the highest rate for robbery with aggravated circumstances in the world. Other rating systems show that five of the ten most dangerous cities are in South Africa. Data shows the murder rate is over 7 times that of America. South Africa has become vastly different than when Stu and I visited there. In fact I have wonderful memories of many visits to South Africa but that was then. Now it is far too dangerous to even stop there to change planes. Infuriatingly gun crime is lower than knife crime simply because the criminals cannot afford to buy a gun so knives, clubs and even rocks are used to commit crime. The tragedy is compounded because of the natural beauty of South Africa. It is easily one of the most beautiful places on earth and it is a massive shame that the crime is so high.
