There has to be a balance in the universe but it’s often difficult to do. Erika Kirk forgave the man who killed her husband but it’s not up to her. It’s up to the very idea of justice and even though society shouldn’t kill people who have killed, under any sensible set of moral law it’s impossible to forgive them. Putting them in ppison is not anywhere equal to the harm they did but it’s just about the best that can be done. Erika Kirk is under a tremendous amount of psychological strain. Certainly she listened to some wrong people who gave her really bad advice about forgiving Tyler Robinson, the killer of her husband. She can think and believe whatever she wants but Justice against a killer is not up to her. Justice requires some action to balance the harm and hurt. If not capital punishment then something else that balances the crime because Justice requires crime be punished. It’s impossible for example to restore Erika’s husband by imprisoning Tyler Robinson, his killer but that’s the best we can do. The killer cannot evade justice because Erika Kirk has come to believe he should. He shouldn’t. Erika should not forgive him in any way. Not in her heart. Not in her head. Not in any way that allows him to escape punishment for his capitol crime.
