Because they are different in a way that matters. Difference per se isn’t bullied. Lot’s of different people are admired and mostly people are indifferent towards other people but a lot of gay people have been going out of their way to show they are gay so it’s understandable that a lot of gay people are going to be bullied because being gay is not the default position of people so people push back to show their feelings towards gay people. Like it or not, being gay means being different and being different means other people notice. In the case of bullying gay people it is a downstream happening of coming out. Coming out has consequences. One consequence is the attitude of non-gay people and a consequence of being non-gay is a preference for non-gay relations. Sure it’s against the law to bully gay people but human nature can and often must be controlled. Gay bashing is a consequence of human nature.
