How fast does a brain work? Nerves carry thoughts by electricity and electricity travels at 168,000 miles per second. The earth is about 25,000 miles in circumference so a thought travels almost 7 times around the earth in a second. A brain is about 4 inches but thoughts only have to travel a few thousandths of an inch between the various tissues so a thought seems instantaneous. That’s misleading. Just as cats think faster than dogs, some people think faster than others. Why? Because cat brains work faster than dog brains. Why? Because dogs hunt cats so cats have to react fast. Some people have to move faster than others so some people have faster working brains than others. What determines brain speed? DNA. technically that’s inherited but brain speed and intelligence although largely inherited are also determined by the way the various tissues and cells combined. In addition to brain speed is the density of thought. Some people can process more information than others. Speed of thought and the amount of thought determine the quality of thought. A rather dim person can out-think any cat because people have more thought density than cats. Don’t thing you can get away from a lion because you are smarter. You are but they are faster and stronger. You are far more intelligent than any lion but you are far slower and more tasty. A fast working brain is not always the best attribute to have, especially when a lion is about. Life in Africa is far easier than life in Europe so European brains have more work to do which leads to brains that can direct more work. That’s not much of a benefit if the extra brain ability isn’t needed and it can lead to over-thinking a problem and getting a slower answer. hardly a benefit.
