China has politicians hiding behind everything. The Pope is naive if he believes otherwise. Refusing to meet with Pompeo is a mistake especially when he is scheduled to meet with Chinese officials.
Officially, Pope Francis declined to meet with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during his trip to Rome on Wednesday so as to avoid being used as a tool for President Trump’s reelection, according to Vatican officials, a decision that comes as Republicans attempt to baselessly accuse Democrats of resisting Trump’s Supreme Court nominee over anti-Catholic bias. Pompeo visited Rome on Wednesday to push back against the renewal of a 2018 deal between China and the Vatican, with some Catholic leaders like Cardinal Oscar Maradiaga saying, “They’re looking for Donald Trump to get elected, and everything is based on that logic.”
Unfortunately, Pope Francis believes in joining Church and State and he’s been a political critic of Trump and his administration’s platform since he was campaigning, saying Trump is “not Christian” in 2016, denouncing the separation of families at the Mexican border in 2018 and supporting anti-racism demonstrations in 2020.
Pompeo’s visit comes as Republicans intend to push through Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett with just a little over a month to go before the November presidential election, with Republicans preemptively accusing any opposition to her as anti-Catholic.
The Popes anti-Trump stance will cost him in the public arena where the president will be elected. After the election the president may feel he has no need to meet with the Pope since the president has been highly successful in brokering many deals with the very difficult Middle East. The Pope has never been able to meet with Israel since he opposes that nation so it’s quite impossible for the Pope to be effective in the Middle East where president Trump has been masterful in bringi9ng the two sides together and getting them to agree to peace deals. It’s quite possible the Pope is simply jealous of president Trump and the American Nation which has been far more successful than the Vatican in so many ways.
