Ilhan Omar quoted activist Angela Davis, who just happened to be among Time magazine’s 100 Women of the Year, published on Thursday.
“In a racist society it is not enough to be non-racist,” Omar said. “We must be anti-racist.”
“Angela Davis spoke those words nearly 50 years ago, but they continue to echo today,” Omar said.
Those remarks were un-informed when Davis made them and they are completely out of place today with race-based set-asides, race based Affirmative Action and the promotion of race based Diversity programs are ubiquitous.
Mutual and particularized understanding of racism as it affects all people of color has the potential to enhance our abilities to understand each other.
Race-based choice is practiced everyday in common and normal life in America and everywhere else that people need to make choices based on human characteristics. Judging people on the basis of their character is behind every race-based choice because it is on their character that decisions that include race either head on or incidentaly. Affirmative Action based on race remains important, especially for African Americans.
