“…if one wishes to gauge the relationship of freedom to the goals of today’s intellectuals, one may gauge it by the fact that the concept of individual rights is evaded, distorted, perverted and seldom discussed.” Why?

Are Rights Necessary? Why? Because an individual needs protection from others including especially from governments which have the monopoly on the use of force. The idea of Rights goes back at least to the Greek and Roman Civilizations. Rights are needed for protection. Protection from whom? Protection from what?

“A “right” is a moral principle defining and sanctioning a man’s freedom of action in a social context.” What are ‘Moral Principles”? They are the values that guide an individuals choices and actions. Government’s are not individuals. Does an individual need a set of rules to guide his choices? Sure, because individuals have a mind and free will. So an individual can make choices and because choices can be beneficial or destructive. Government does not have free will. Government does not need something to protect it’s choices. It instead has power to enforce it’s will on individuals. The problem with government is there is no morality in an entity that cannot think. An individual must decide to live or to die. Government need not make that choice. The actions needed to keep oneself alive are what the mind decides. The purpose of the body is to keep the brain alive. The purpose of Individual Rights is to keep the body alive.

Since government has no body to keep alive it has no use for a set of rules to do it. Government has power. Power has no need for an idea that keeps it alive. government is not a person. No person, no rights, none.
