In Vietnam he flew where he was told not to fly and got shot down. That’s hardly heroic. McCain graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1958; he was fifth from the bottom in class rank, 894th out of 899. That’s so close to dead last that he should be considered as graduating almost last in his class. Nothing to be proud of. In fact it’s a reason to be ashamed and his family should know that about John. He was captured and tortured. He shouldn’t have been tortured. The torture is something he had to endure and he tried to commit suicide. He was tortured on behalf of the United States. For that he gets immense gratitude. Most of his life hiwever is not something about which we should be grateful. He crashed very expensive military aircraft. He constantly broke the rules and because he broke the rule about not flying in the area in which he decided to fly he was shot down and had to endure the torture. The torture is a knock against our enemies. His capture is on him. He shouldn’t be called a hero because he was first and foremost a screw-up.
