In Algebra “X” can mean something simple or enormously complex. Not so for terrorism. The simple solution is to ban incoming followers of Islam and deport the ones already here but that’s not a solution because it’s impossible as well as unjust
Better vetting ala President Trump can help but vetting isn’t perfect and it only takes one or a few terrorists. A complete ban on certain countries will help but eventually the ban will expire and the problem being left to fester will break out again and again. that solution isn’t complex enough.
Deport Muslims likewise won’t work in America because for starters we won’t let it and because it’s against the basic foundation of America which is a culture based on individual liberty. A free people can hardly support capturing other free people.
Likewise testing for loyalty was stopped just about as soon as America was formed because it’s based on “Guilty, prove you are innocent”.
Guilt by association is also insufficiently complex. No one other than a parent for a limited time is responsible for the conduct of someone else.
Neither can the police go into mosques or churches to investigate the people in there but they can surveil those before they enter and after they exit but because the police cannot investigate unless there’s a crime, that’s out too.
How about the Michael Brown solution? Confront a cop and it won’t end good for you but we don’t want to purposely put individual police officers in that situation.
