Paying for doctor visits and medicine wasn’t expensive until government got involved. Sixty years ago a doctor visit was $5 and another $1 if you got a “shot”, meaning “a needle” aka. “an injection”.  In 1947 it cost one mother $70 to give birth in a hospital including six days for herself and her newborn and all of the costs for doctors, nurses and medication. $70. HERE.

The cost right now would be in excess of $20,000.00 for the same services. A dollar today is worth 8.9 cents compared to a 1947 dollar. $70 in 1947 would equal $$786 today but why are doctors and drugs so much more expensive today compared to 1947?

The law of supply and demand proves when the supply increases the cost decreases. More births should mean the cost went down. In 1947 there were 3,699,940 live births registered in the United States. In 2015 there were 3,977,745 live births. More women in 2105 but fewer babies per woman. So there are no more births so the price should not have changed but it increased from $70 in 1947 to $20,000 today. In terms of constant 1947 dollars the cost of a birth increased to 25 times as much. Why?

In 1964 President Lyndon Johnson launched “The Great Society” which expanded government control of the medical industry. Everything connected to medicine increased because the government would pay more for the same services. Birth was no exception. Government interference increased the cost of having a baby.

In 1947 having a baby cost $70. a bit more than one weeks income for the average worker. Today it’s $20,000, almost six months worth of income for most working people. A working person cannot afford $20,000 so they would buy a medical insurance policy and the Federal Government charges people for medical whether or not they buy medical insurance. That’s crazy. Forcing people to buy something they don’t want is un-American. Paying doctors 25 times more to do the same procedure they used to do for one twentyfifth of the cost is also crazy.

President Trump should not replace Obamacare. He should cancel it and get government out of paying for doctors. The price of having a baby would come back down to $786. No one whould need medical insurance because medical care would be one twentyfifth of what it is today.
Did you figure out the two word solution to expensive medical care?
