A missile only has to travel to the shipping lane which is only 12 miles. At Mach 5, 3,800 miles an hour which is about 1 mile per second which means there are 12 seconds to fire an interceptor. The interceptor has to travel much faster to intercept it. That’s a really small amount of time.
