She keeps crashing and getting hurt. It is her third ACL tear. She has a titanium knee. It goes along with: a fractured ankle, knee, humerus, microfractures in her forearm, tibial fractures in her leg, a torn LCL, two torn MCLs and an acute facet dysfunction of her back – better known as debilitating spasms brought on by trauma. Is she just accident-prone or is she a really great skier who runs into trouble that’s not really her fault? Consider that the fastest skiers travel up to an incredible 158.4 miles an hour so there’s not a lot of time to make decisions so the speed is both the objective and part of the problem. the design of the skis while critical is also serendipitous in that they must react across a spectrum of inputs that range from weight, angle, shape, condition of the snow/ice and material and provide an output that changes from slight to excessive. I would change the shape of the metal edge from the current 90 degrees to a much sharper edge that includes three edges per edge and several edges in the middle of the ski to provide more control going straight.
Speed on skies is exhilarating! It becomes addictive and addictions are difficult to manage. Let’s be very clear… Vonn is one of the greatest skiers ever. She is 5’10” tall, incredibly fit and smart. We do not know how smart because he IQ isn’t available on line but she can think exceptionally fast because the speed of thought is one marker of higher intelligence.. otherwise she couldn’t ski so fast because skiing is part intelligence and part reaction. So YES we should admire Lindsey Vonn and all good luck to Lindsey… All the best we can wish even though we realize it’s all up to her. Go girl!
