Growing up in Philadelphia gave me no idea at all about South Africa. I was well into mid-life when I first went there. Apartheid was in power. Johannesburg was the destination and while the Latin Mass had gone in America it was still used in Jo’Berg.

The flight from JFK to South Africa was far too long to make it in one flight. The 8 hour PanAm flight stopped at Isle d’Sal, the island of salt in the Cape Verde Island group just off of West Africa. the aircraft was re-fueled and the second leg from Cape Verde to Johannesburg took another 9 hours.
