There’s no doubt that prayer is powerful. It has changed the course of human history and is an example of an activity limited only to humans. No other animal can pray. The question is: does prayer work? Yes, according to the massive number of people who use it but it is only a secondary effect. People pray so that God will do something for them. Cure a sick person, stop a war. Something seemingly impossible yet the dependence upon a God or a Saint to intercede with God is a usual object of prayer. Why someone cannot pray for something real to happen instead of calling on a supernatural entity to do it for them is one of life’s great unknowns.
