April 10, 2025.. A commercial helicopter just ran out of fuel and crashed into the Hudson River. An entire family of five plus the pilot were killed. How stupid was that?
Several aircraft crashes happened because of running out of fuel. Once a pilot landed for gas at South Jersey Regional but the price was $0.05 per gallon higher than at another airport so he took off, ran out of fuel and crashed his Beech Bonanza. This is especially tragic because the fuel can be seen on a Bonanza because the fuel caps are on the wing so it’s a simple matter of just looking at the fuel as compared to the Cessna high wing aircraft which require climbing up to get access to the top if the wings where the fuel caps are located. It’s harder to see the fuel in a high wing aircraft but fuel is so essential that it’s a necessary thing to do. Fuel gauges are such little things on an aircraft that it simply is common sense to get a look at the fuel before flying. When we were teenagers just starting to drive we didn’t have much money and we ran out of fuel before learning how to manage the fuel. Simple yet vital and in an aircraft it can be fatal. So if you are flying in a small plane do yourself a big favor and follow the pilot around during the pre-flight inspection and get a look at the actual fuel level. The life you save may very well be your own!
