There are three choices regarding the basis of a moral code. 1. Mysticism. 2. Society. 3. Yourself. If you choose religion as the basis of your moral code you are a mystic. You believe in a power greater than yourself. If you choose society you are a Socialist/ Faschist/Communist. If you chose Yourself you are correct. The basis of your morality is the set of values and virtues you chose to follow. Most people sort of follow both mysticism and socialism. Most people are wrong. Mysticism means following something that can never be known so your values come down to “anything goes’. Socialism means following the idea that society knows better about what to do which means you give permission to a mob to decide what to do. Holding yourself as the standard of value is rare but correct. Not the worst of yourself but the best. Most people, unfortunately, believe people are evil, sinners, Adam and Eve’s sin and need to be controlled. That’s the basis of slavery and is also very un-American.
