If you put one ton load on a half ton bucket, the bucket will break. The load is higher than the material can support. When the Titan descended it was subject to a higher and higher pressure. At 12,500 feet the pressure is 5,547 pounds on every square inch of the hull including the end pieces. When it ascended, when it came up, the pressure was less and less. The result was like bending a paperclip back and forth. In the case of a paperclip we know what happens. Bend it back and forth several times and it breaks. In the case of the Titan it was made from five inch thick carbon fiber reinforced plastic in the shape of a cylinder with the ends closed by spherical shapes made of titanium. When it was tested at depth it was compressed by the water pressure. As it ascended it expanded, like a paper clip being bent and then straightened.
From photographs of people inside the hull it seems to have been about four and a half feet in diameter inside and we’ve been told the hull was five inches thick so the outside would have been about five and a half feet in diameter. That means there was about a 261 million pounds of pressure on the hull. 260,852,512 pounds to be exact. We now know the hull imploded. No wonder. 261 million pounds is as heavy as 63,622 cars. That’s practically incomprehensible.. That’s why it was dangerous.
