The cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean are kept out by the Strait of Gibraltar. The sun heats the rest so the Mediterranean Sea is just about one of the most hospitable places for people. It goes from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to Israel in the East. Civilization started around the Mediterranean. Life, human life began in Africa and moved North into Europe but there are a lot of reasons why the history of human life centered around the Mediterranean. The Greek civilization may have stated in or on some of the islands and Greece itself is a very, very pleasant place to be, as is Rome and so many places all the way to the famed Balearic Islands, Ibiza and all. The weather is just about perfect just about all of the time. Culture increases as one goes North into Europe. The Med is far too pleasant to leave so most people stayed put. A choice to live in Rome or Stockholm for example would keep most people in Rome. Rome has no cruel weather. Stockholm does and the weather gets worse and worse as one moves North from The Baltic Sea.
