Millions play soccer but no one was a great as Pele. Why? What was his highest ability? His desire to win. That desire can be called Heart or Soul and it isn’t as strong in most people as it was in Pele. Pele wasn’t gifted with anything. He worked hard and long to perfect his abilities with a soccer ball. He was a very human, very great human because of his achievements with a soccer ball. No one is born with the ability to do what Pele did. He did it with his human drive. What that drive is cannot be seen, measured or calculated. It is an abstraction but it is an abstraction that existed inside Pele. Without hsi drive; without his desire he would not have become the greatest athlete. In America, Jim Thorpe became great playing football, American football, not the same football played by Pele. Thorpe became great just as Pele became great. We celebrate their greatness.
