To replace fossil fueled electric power plants with clean, renewably generated electricity sure sounded good. Corn was easy to grow, biomass (wood, predominantly) was abundant, wind and sunshine were free. And even better, many believed renewable energy would close America’s 100-odd nuclear power plants. So, the nation started down the path of creating clean energy from renewables.

Or what was thought to be clean energy. After converting over 10 million acres to growing corn for ethanol, reality set in. We discovered that repurposing cropland drove up food prices. Studies showed that over its full cycle growing and then burning corn ethanol actually created as much or more atmospheric carbon than gasoline. Corn ethanol could not be the answer. Turns out that oil and methane gas are better alternatives than ethanol, wind and solar. Only thing better than fossil fuels is nuclear power. (GASP’s heard from the left!) In fact fossil fuels are even moral. See Alex Epstein: “The Moral Case For Fossil Fuels”. Turns out that the use of fossil fuels dramatically improves the overall progress of humanity, and improves life expectancy and income so using human life as the standard Fossil Fuels are the preferred fuel for now and the future with the move to nuclear even better.
