CNN misreported that: “Three months ago, Tree of Life Rabbi Hazzan Jeffrey Myers took to his congregation’s blog and bemoaned the scourge of gun violence and the failure of lawmakers to address the problem.
Three months later, that menace entered his sanctuary. A gunman stepped into the Pittsburgh synagogue as congregants observed Shabbat.
Nature gives us two arms. Against a bigger enemy your two aren’t enough because the enemy has bigger arms and means to hurt you. The shooting in the Pittsburgh synagogue prompted this column. It wasn’t a violent gun as CNN unconscionably misreported, it was a violent man.
You can’t grow another arm so what can you do? You can buy one.
Rabbi Hazam Jeffery Myers is completely and dangerously wrong when he demands the government keep him safe. He’s needs to step up and figure out he is responsible to keep himself safe, not demand someone else do his job for him. He should have been armed. He wasn’t. That’s on him.
Your additional arm can be smaller than your arm, shorter, skinnier, no muscle showing but much more powerful, powerful enough to offset the power of an attacker. Your third arm is called a firearm because it works by burning gunpowder and shooting a bullet at the attacker. Having a third arm is called being armed in honor of the increased power of your third arm. It’s a mark of respect for your two arms that it’s not until you get the means to protect yourself against an attacker that you are considered to be armed.
In support of freedom, most of the time you don’t need a firearm to be safe but when you need one it’s best to have one where it can be used to protect you from an attack from one or more attackers. America is a rather unique place for many, many reasons but the biggest reason for the uniqueness of America is the recognition that other people are safe, just like you although sometimes a dangerous person slips in among us. That’s when you need to be armed.
American’s don’t need guns to hunt because most people don’t hunt. Even when America was founded, most people traded things or bought their food including meat. They didn’t need to hunt but they needed protection from enemies so the founders made sure people could be armed by recognizing most people most of the time are safe to other people. Acquiring a firearm, a gun, is because there are dangerous things in life and sometimes having a gun makes the difference between living or dying, between life and death.
The tragedy of the inhuman attack inside the Pittsburgh synagoge proves that one gun could have made the difference between stopping the killer instead of the killer being able to continue to kill people. One person with one gun with one bullet.
President Donald Trump pondered aloud on Saturday whether guns inside the synagogue might have led to a less tragic outcome.
Rabbi Myers is dreadfully, sadly and ignorantly telling people that they can be safe by relying on the government. Most of the time that’s correct. Most people aren’t dangerous but the Rabbi needs to figure out that if he want’s to be safer he needs to buy and carry a firearm. If just one person inside the synagogue had one gun with one bullet thay may have made a difference. That’s not wishful thinking, that’s fact.
