“Strange things are done neath the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold” is the beginning of “The Cremation of Sam McGee” (Here), who dies in cold of the far north and his friend carries his body south to sunny land.
In Lonesome Dove the final adventure is when Call returns Gus’s body to the town of Lonesome Dove where he was happiest, along the Rio Grand in Texas.
Lonesome Dove has a sad ending while the Cremation of Sam McGee ends on an upnote. Both Lonesome Dove and The Cremation of Sam McGee are classics in their own right and deserve to be enjoyed.
