The obvious answer is related to slavery. White people were not slaves in America but black people were. Same for Hispanics and other races of people so even though slavery was made illegal in 1862, the oppression felt by black people still uses slavery to justify their positions in the culture.
There were minstrel shows with white people wearing blackface. Were black people offended? Perhaps but they weren’t in the audiences so it’s a difficult case to support. Why was blackface used to make white people appear black? How else could it have been done?
