The U.S.S. Gabrielle Giffords is a ship to deliver an assault force including tanks and tank destroyers. This is a serious weapon so why did the Navy name if after a woman who hates guns? Irony?
Giffords went so far as to condemn guns even when they aren’t used in a terror attack. Pointing a finger at someone is like using a gun.
But her husband is a Captain in the U.S. Navy so politics is obvious.
Perhaps it’s nothing deeper than wanting to do something to show some sympathy and consideration for a U.S. Congresswoman who was shot while talking to constituents in a supermarket parking lot on January 8, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona. The shooter was judged incompetent and sentenced to life in prison. Six other people were killed by the assailant, Jared Loughner.
Giffords was shot in the back of her head. The bullet exited through her forehead above her left eye. A gruesome wound.
She had surgery within 38 minutes after being shot. She survived but had to give up her Congressional seat to go through rehab. Naming a ship after her seems to be neither here nor there because she seemingly did nothing to make naming a ship after her appropriate.
Perhaps it will be a reminder of the shootings but that’s not a reason to name a combat warship after her.
Well, it’s done. No need to go any further with the issue.
