In Bucks County, Pennsylvania homes are about 150 feet or more apart so they have a small mailbox along side their roadway where the mail is delivered. The mail delivery person stops the vehicle, opens the mailbox, collects mail from the box then collects the mail that is to be delivered, puts it in the box and closes the box. The delivery vehicle then moves to the next mailbox where the process is repeated. The vehicle is stopped then started repeatedly during the day. If the vehicle is gasoline powered or uses a diesel engine the engine is either shut off during the stop at each mailbox or left running. If it is shut off it has to be re-started and if it’s left running it has to be taken out of gear then restarted and put back into gear. The easiest way to do all of that is with an electric powered vehicle which uses no power when it is stopped so no power is needed to restart it, just increase the amount of electricity going to the electric motor and off it goes. There is far less wear and tear with an electric powered vehicle. If the battery on an electric vehicle needs recharging the vehicle can be returned to the post office where is can be re-charged but another vehicle will have to be used to return the operator to pick-up and delver the mail. In the alternative, the battery can be removed and replaced with a fully charged battery to save time instead of waiting for a battery to be charged. An electric powered vehicle will need less time at each stop so the operator can make more stops during each delivery shift or the operator can make more stops meaning fewer vehicles would be needed. In addition, an electric vehicle produces far less pollution than a gasoline or diesel engined vehicle but there is pollution at a power plant where the electricity is produced because the electric must be generated or produced by a generator which requires some kind of power. the most common fuels for electric power are coal, natural gas or diesel fuel so electricity produces pollution to but not as much as gasoline or diesel powered vehicles.
