It’s rather simple to make Uranium 235 by using a centrifuge to separate it from U238 and remove the florine and presto, the resultant metal is U235. You can run a centrifuge in your basement – they aren’t very large. A few hundred however take up quite a bit more room and a few hundred are needed to coax to U235 away from the U238 but about 110 pounds of the metal are needed. If you use Plutonium, Pu-239 you only need about 14 pounds but it’s kind of tricky because you also need some Gallium and maybe some Vanadium. All that but still no bomb because a lot more has to be done to get the U-235 to explode. No need to get into all that here, just realize the making U-235 is just the beginning of making a nuclear device and from all that’s known it was being done by some bad people.
