It was a half block from the Temple Sholom Synagogue so there were plenty of Jewish friends in the neighborhood. I’m looking at a photo I took of six friends taken around age 11 or so and all of them are Jewish. A seventh friend, Miriam, also Jewish is out of the photo but she was part of the group too. They were early friends and decades later I remember each and every one with a special kind of fondness that seems to be part of early friendships. Maybe that’s why I’m attracted to the issues of Israel which was created as a new country in 1948, well within my memory. Over 70 years has gone by and I have no idea where any of those friends are but they still qualify as my friends.
