It’s as much of a Democracy as it can be without direct elections of everything. If America was a Democracy then Hillary Clinton would have been the 43rd president because she won more votes than Donald Trump, 65.9 million vs 62.9 million but rules are rules and Trump won 30 states while Hillary won the other 20 and Trump won 304 Electors while Hillary only won 227. If America was a democracy, and because it’s possible to count the vote in about one day America could be a Democracy, Hillary would have been president and Donald would have been just another rich businessman. Nevertheless, America is a Republic, a government run by the representatives of the voters, not by the voters. America is therefore correctly described as a “Democratic Republic”. Or: as a “Representive Republic”. America is definately not a Democracy. It is simply incorrect to call the president a representative of the people. He can function that way. He can act that way but he cannot be that way because no single person has a representative in the government because no representative represents any single person.
