It’s one of the best cameras in my collection which includes Hasselblads (which take far better photographs) but none of the other cameras have the physical handsomeness of the Kodal Retina IV.
It has an f/1.9 lens which is plenty fast with todays ASA 200 or ASA 400 film. The amount of exquisite detail in the camera and the chrome trimmed leather case in almost overwhelming. In addition to the camera which cost under a hundred bucks I have a 135mm f/4.0 telephoto and I just ordered a 28mm f/4.0 wide angle for sixty one bucks which includes tax and freight.
The leather case is trimmed with chrome plated metal. The back has a very tiny little button that has to be pushed in to release the swing-out back. It worked once then I couldn’t get it to work again until in noticed a clever tiny chrome guard around the button which prevents it from being pushed in accidently when the camera is put down. This is great design. I wish there were more things designed with the intelligence that went into this camera.
