A pilot needs to time events. A stopwatch is used to time events so a pilot needs a stopwatch. He can use two. One on his wrist and another he can hold in his hand or put it where he can see it. If you want to buy a watch for a pilot get a chronograph. They have three small dials and two buttons plus the standard winder that can be pulled out to set the time, date and other function.
Some watches have a circular slide rule with one scale that’s stationary and the outer scale that can be rotated. Those are fantastic but not too many pilots know how to use them. Better to get a calculator. Two stopwatches and a calculator. That’s pretty much all you can buy a pilot as far as watches go.
It’s extremely satisfying to be flying an instrument approach to a runway that’s in the fog and watching the stopwatch to show when it’s time to give up the approach and either try it again or go to another airport. One of the most satisfying is to shoot an instrument landing system approach where the aircraft is flying down the glidepath and lined up with the runway but all that’s visible in the windshield is white fog or in the black of night then out of the fog appears the runway environment, either the approach lights or the runway itself. A few seconds later the wheels touchdown on the runway and the flight is over.
