We wish him well. Tiger is a very, very rare person and we hope things go sll the right way during his surgery and recovery. 
The Air Bag(s) was/were deployed and may have saved his life. As an engineer who was involved in the development of the air-bag I know the life saving abilities of the system but a crash is a complex event and relying on an air bag or two to save a live is not a practical idea. Better to drive to prevent accidents. An air bag is deployed by a gas generator, similar to a cartridge where the gas stored inside the powder that rapidly burns and fills the bag. A lot of noise and usually within a second it’s all over. Woods life was saved.
