This 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Springfield St. Martin Brewster Town Car, … Brewster, …  meaning the coachwork was completed at the Brewster plant in Long Island City, New York, in America.

It was purchased new by King C. Gillette, inventor of the Gillette Razor and founder of the Gillette Safety Razor Company and  remained in the Gillette family until 1964 when it was purchased by the Shochitt family of New York with approximately 13,000 miles at that time. Under the Shochitt family ownership this car truly became a celebrity in its own right, appearing in numerous movies including The April Fools with Jack Lemmon, The Cotton ClubPutney Swope and numerous television commercials. It also won first in its class at the 1965 Madison Square Garden Autorama. It remains in incredibly original condition with its original Wilton Wool carpets, Mahogany inlays, and an assortment of original tools, factory accessories, and spare wheel hubs that are truly impressive.

This particular model of the Rolls-Royce Phantom was Rolls-Royce’s replacement for the original Silver Ghost. Introduced as the ‘New Phantom’ in 1925, the Phantom had a larger engine than the Silver Ghost and used innovative pushrod-operated overhead valves instead of the Silver Ghost’s side valves. The innovative engine is constructed as two groups of three cylinders with a single detachable head. The engine was described by Rolls-Royce as producing “sufficient” power. The engine used a 4¼ in (107.9 mm) bore and undersquare 5½ in (139.7 mm) stroke for a total of a 7.7 L (7,668 cc or 467.9 cu in) pushrod-OHV straight-6.

A light patina naturally associated with a car of this age shows it’s a unique original 1928 motorcar. It has just undergone an extensive $25K mechanical service which included: a new clutch, brakes, fuel tank system and Bijur central lubrication system freshening. There are few Rolls-Royces in existence that can claim such provenance, documented history, and state of preservation as this one. A unique, historic and actually operating motor car.

It is truly one of the most famous and most photographed Rolls Royce’s of all time, and it is with great pleasure that it is offered for sale at this time.

Classic cars have proven to be among the most resilient and rewarding investments in recent years with the Historic Automobile Group Index (HAGI) jumping 39% in 2013, 16% in 2014 and 17% in 2015 while posting gains of 467% over the last 10 years.
