President Trump was respectful of Elijah Cummings.
Trump tweeted his “condolences to the family and many friends of Congressman Elijah Cummings. I got to see first hand the strength, passion and wisdom of this highly respected political leader.”
Very, very respectful of Elijah’s life. Very nice to see. “Strength, Passion and Wisdom”. President Trump does not use words lightly.
In 2015, when the death of black Baltimore resident Freddie Gray sparked the worst riots the city had seen in decades, Cummings was in the streets, carrying a bullhorn and urging crowds to go home and respect a curfew. He spoke at Gray’s funeral, asking lawmakers in the church to stand up to show Gray’s mother they would seek justice.
“I want justice, oceans of it. I want fairness, rivers of it. That’s what I want. That’s all I want,” Cummings said.
Indeed. We all want that but in addition we want Americans who are American. They can arrive here from wherever with the hopes that they will be Americans. To stay they should become Americans. Elijah was an American who did the absolute best he could for the Americans he represented. No one asks for more.
Will President Trump attend Elijah’s funeral? It would be a marker of the respect of the president for him. Whether or not it will be safe is another matter. There is considerable animosity within Elijah’s community towards not only president Trump but those within his community too. Here’s hoping this will be an American moment for all involved.
