It’s a book called “The Molly Maguires” written by Antonio Bimba, an avowed communist. It’s supposed to be a true account of the Mollies in the PA coal region and the innocent men who were hung by the trumped-up cases against them but it’s written by a confirmed America hater; an avowed communist who wrongly uses labor to promote communism and socialism. Bimba is a scoundral who is against Capitalism and who views the owners and operators of a colliery as criminals against the workers who they use to get coal. Bimba is against profit. He supports mobs of people who can coi8ncidently be controlled by people like Bimba. Bimba is against ownership of anything especially those who own the land and who build huge “Breakers” to turn the chunks of coal into smaller sizes that can be used to heat homes and cook food. A “Colliery” is the complete operation of a coal mine.
The idea that the owners of a colliery would fight against the men who they paid to get the coal for them is preposterous on it’s face. The battles of the coal fields were between various grups that wanted to control the jobs just like is done on the waterfront or anywhere there are large numbers of people trying to get one of a few jobs and the jobs are controlled by the practice of hiring by a boss. The colliery owners faced competition from other mines and from other forms of energy such as wood and soft coal.
Selling prices are controlled by the market. Labor cost is a cost just like the cost of an elevator needed to take the miners deep underground or the steel rails to take the coal to market. President Trump got involved with the coal market when he promised the people of West Virginia he would not forget them.
