Pope Francis was protected by the automatic brakes on the elevator which stop it from falling. The brakes are actuated when the elevator falls. They are thrust outwards into the rails and they protect the occupants from injury by falling.

Francis told the crowd he had been trapped in the elevator for 25 minutes, but intervention from firefighters saved the day.

“Thank God the Fire Brigade came,” Francis said. “Let’s hear it for the Fire Brigade!”

He most likely did not know that the brakes saved him. Another great example of engineering in action.
