More people could have been shot if there were only more guns to use to settle up disputes faster than just talking. Even worse is the walk-away tactic which keeps the dispute going until there is a real confrontation where someone could be shot or even killed.

According to recent crime statistics released to CBS Chicago, so far in 2019 1,229 people have been shot in Chicago, about 100 fewer than the first six months of 2018, and the lowest total since 2015. Police also said there have been 236 murders through the end of June, 21 fewer than the same time period last year.

But people get angrier in summer when they can leave their home and get out on the street where there are more people with whom to argue. Arguments can lead to fights and fights can lead to gunfire. If there were more guns more disputes could be settled right then and there but as civilized people we are deeply against shooting people. The difference between life and death can be as simple as a small amount of gunpowder and a small bit of lead. People need to develop better coping skills to better tolerate those who disagree. A way to settle up things quickly before a fight starts needs to be found. So far, even though civilization is thousands of years old there are some few people who just can’t keep themselves under control. More control leads to better outcomes or at least to fewer shots.
