Raise taxes and get less money is not how Philly mayor Kinney thinks. He wanted more money so he raised the tax on soda. that made soda more expensive in Philly so people drove to Bensalem, to the main line and to Delaware county to save a bit of money.
Kinney says people will eventually see it’s cheaper for them to pay more for soda instead of driving where there is no Philly soda tax. He’s wrong.
People are driving a little and buying 10, 20, 40 2 liter bottles at a time. Buy 10 2 liter bottles of COKE and save a $10.14. No need to drive to Bensalem more than three or four times a year. In a year, 50 bottles saves That saves $50.70 a year.
And people who drive out of Philly to shop save more than that. They buy groceries out of Philly too. Philly has an 8% sales tax. All around Philly the counties charge only 6%. That’s a 20% saving in addition to the savings on the soda tax. Most customers could save several hundred dollars by shopping outside of Philly and that’s what they are doing.
Will Kinney back off? Why no. The economically challenged mayor is going to increase the taxes even more. He says he needs the money. The voters say they won’t pay more so they drive a bit and save a bundle.
Kinney needs to be told to remember the American Revolution. It was started because of higher taxes. It was called “The Tea Party”. Philly voters have started “The Philly Soda Party” and they are throwing their empty lower taxed soda bottles in their Philly trash.
