….because she wasn’t born the first time I went to South Africa.. South Africa holds a special place in my heart because it is a wonderful and wonderous place but it is far too dangerous to visit these days. Charlize was born in Benoni, about 16 miles from Jo-Berg about a year after my first visit to the diamond mining country. My first mussel was eaten in Capetown and it was and remains a very favorite food. Capetown is another very special place on the planet because of Table Mountain; because of the wines of Stellenbosch; because of the National Sea Rescue Service in Port Elizabeth; because of a visit to Rhodesia when it wasn’t called Zimbawbwe and because of many other firsts for me. South Africa is a glorious place to live but that glory has faded because of the failures of the present set of governors all over South Africa. I first watched the Concord on it’s approach to Jan Smuts airport from a table in the restaurant of the Holiday Inn.
