And they look beautiful..
They are slow.. JFK’s boat was 25 feet long along the waterline and maybe three feet longer on deck. It was a Wianno Senior Sloop,
that went almost 8 miles an hour at full speed. Of course that means it went 8 mph all day and all night. That’s 185 miles a day. It’s 2,885 miles from Boston to Galway in Ireland so it would take 15.6 days to sail the JFK’s tiny little sailboat to Ireland but it wouldn’t need one drop of fuel. You’d need some beans and rice for the trip but no fuel. That’s one of the attractions of a sailboat. You can go around the world for zero dollars. You can catch fish along the way to save on food and you’d need a way to make or carry water, but you could go anywhere you wanted to go all around the world for nothing but the cost of food. It would have taken JFK 135 days, about 4 1/2 months to sail around the world in his 25 foot sailboat and it would have been a grueling trip. If he had a bigger boat, say twice as big, he could have done it in 3.63 months compared to about 48 hours in a jet plane.
