It can happen in an instant and no one will be able to rescue you because they may not be able to find you. It’s simple really for China to arrest you. They simply do it and that’s it. You do not have the right to a lawyer. You do not even get a phone call to let someone know what has happened to you. You may not even realize what has happened to you and I can attest to all that from personal experience from having travelled to and from China many, many times. Perhaps I was fortunate. Maybe I was lucky but I was detained in China while waiting in the departure lounge. A uniformed man appeared with two armed guards and simply said: “Mr O’Neill?” I answered: “yes”. He said: “follow me”. Having experience dealing with armed people of course I followed as I was told to do.
I was taken to a small room and interrogated. That’s how easy and fast you can be arrested in China. They do not have to advise the embassy that they have arrested you. You have no right to a telephone call becuse you have no Right’s at all in China. Zero.. Zero Rights. Forget about being an American. It means nothing. Not when you are arrested in China. So…. If you go to China go in a large group. You will have a better chance of leaving if you are in a large group and someone is responsible to keep you from any problems but arresting a group is rather simple so the best advice at the moment is do not go to China. Don’t even go to Hong Kong because unlike when I was there back in the mid 1970’s, when Great Britain was in charge of Hong Kong, China has taken control of Hong Kong again so stay out of Hong Kong too.
