Ned’s father, Ed “Mack” McGovern was a pioneer in the engine business. We met during the days of Perkins Engines, the New York Boat Show at the Javits Center and the days of Engines International in South Philly. Mack was a navy aircraft pilot and we briefly discussed flying. His experiences were unique because he flew a seaplane launced from a battleship. He would land near it and they would hoist the airplane with Mack in it aboard. Rather dangerous work for a real courageous guy. My flying hours were higher than Macks but not nearly as exciting.
Ned and his younger brother Steve were in charge of the business when I did a survey for them with some recommendations and suggestions to improve the business. Ned received it well but Steve was skeptical.
Ned was a great guy to work with. I didn’t realize we were both Villanova grads. Ned passed away on April 14th and for some reason I looked him up online a few days ago even though our paths hadn’t crossed in perhaps 40 years. I remenber fondly Ned, Steve, their dad “Mack” and some of the people at Mack Boring and Parts all those years ago. Some people impress others and Mack and Ned were two of those people .
