The record for crossing the Atlantic in an extremely fast monohull racing sailboat is a bit over 5 1/2 days.
That’s the record, not the average.
A Boeing 787 does it in a bit over 4 hours.
The 787 is about 30 times faster than a racing sailboat. So.. If you have a long life with lots of extra time, get a sailboat. If you need to get to Europe to do something, fly.
OK. A sailboat seems very romantic and a fifty foot sailboat; which is probably the minimum size you need to safely cross the Atlantic; is a beautiful piece of work but spending almost a week to cross the Atlantic will make you want to scream in frustration after about a day and a half. And remember, …you need food and water for five days on the sailboat but you can fly that far in between meals. T
he world has certainly moved on since Columbus sailed over here. The current monohum transatlantic record holder is “Comanche” which had a crew of about 20 men. Not a cheap way to travel. Not fast either. But loads of fun!
