HOW AND WHY CAPITALISM WORKS AND SOCIALISM DOESN’T.
How many choices do you make in a day? Suppose those choices could be cut to zero? That would be Socialism where government makes the decisions and the people must obey those decisions.
Several Internet sources claim individuals make 35,000 decisions a day. If we consider 6 hours for sleep, that is 1,944 decisions an hour. I think that 35,000 must be using a very loose definition of what it means to make a decision. Anyway, this number is very popular and all over the Internet. If each movement is counted as a decision the number seems pretty ok. Other sources use 70 decisions a day. that seems too low. Let’s go with one hundred.
Back to having government or society make the decisions or at least the very big ones like:
Where to live.
What to wear
What to eat,
What to buy.
Where to go.
How to travel.
But the smaller decisions like whether or not to answer the phone or even where to look right now and then where to look a bit later are decisions.
A totalitarian culture would stop most of the above decisions.
Where to live. Government would decide. That’s the way it works in China. The government tells you where to live. You go there. Government tells you where you will work. You obey. Where you will eat. When you will eat. What you will eat.
Don’t believe it? I was in China for the first time in 1975. That’s the way it worked.
Why did people accept it? Because it was better than before Mao took over. Before that many people didn’t get enough food, had few clothes or even worse rags. Mao changed that. Communal kitchens where food was prepared for everyone. Same jacket for everyone, the Mao jacket and the same kind of pants. People accepted it for three reasons: they had to obey; it provided food, clothes and shelter where before that many people had no shelter, no work so no money to buy clothes or food and many people didn’t have the necessities until Mao took over and forced the people to obey him but they became better off than before. It worked because there was no alternative.
Would Capitalism have worked better? Sure but there was far too many criminals and too much corruption so Mao didn’t know how to start a capitalist culture and he simply wasn’t wasn’t interested to create a capitalist culture. He wanted to move the Chinese people so they would stay alive, – things were that bad.
America in the 16 hundreds was different so a free culture sort of happened. People had to provide when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth and when the business people came ashore in Jamestown, Virginia on behalf of the King. America was founded on the basis of you plant the corn, you eat the corn. Extra corn could be traded for chickens or other things. that’s capitalism. Capitalism is based on trade. The trades were freely, that is not coerced. that’s capitalism, not socialism. Socialism is where the neighbors and the government decide what people should do.
In addition, no government can make all the decisions each person has to make each day. That’s why Socialism, Fascism, Communism and Totalitarianism don’t work. Too many decisions for the government to make.
Welfae seems to contradict that but welfare is taking care of the peole who cannot take care of themselves. Sure it is too expensive because of the lazy people who won’t work, because of the cheats who want someone else to keep them alive and the dumb and ignorant peole who just can’t make it b=on their own. the adults who are literally just older children who cannot keep themselves alive so we step in and do it for them.
Welfare works because most people are not so dysfunctional that they can’t take care of themselves so they can do things for themselves that lets them live and thrive. these are the capable people step up and take care of the welfare livers. Yes, it’s theft and lots of other bad things being done to good people who are not at fault but who pay for the welfare people, welfare cheats and all. zIt just has to be kept under control so that most people are able to keep themselves alive and thrive and pay for the people who just can’t do it. The wrong of welfare is the people who refuse to work who should not be taken care of by the rest of us but that’s where we are at the moment.
